For my third free crochet pattern (oh my… already the 3rd ! and here I was thinking that I wasn’t’ able to write even one ahah), I’m sharing with you guys… a baby penguin.
I LOVE it ! He’s so damned cute and super easy to make, especially if you’re already familiar with color changing. If you’re not : just give it a try ! I guarantee you it’s pretty simple once you’re used to it ; it’s really just like changing yarn when you’ve finished your ball.
Ready… Let’s go !
Just before you grab your crochet hook…
Crocheted baby penguin : materials
- 100 % cotton yarn. Colors needed : off-white, black, charcoal grey and ligh grey
- Crochet hook : 3 mm / C
- Stitch marker
- Tapestry needle
- Embroidery scissors (any tiny scissors will do just fine)
- Black safety eyes – 4 mm (optional : you can easily embroider the eyes instead)
- Stuffing
Abreviations used in the pattern
- rd : round
- st : stitch
- s.c : single crochet
- inc : increase
- dec : decrease
Pattern reading and notes
- [xx] : the number between the square brackets instructs of the total of stitches you should have at the end of the row/round.
- (xxx) x 2 : the instructions between brackets should be repeated across the round a certain number of times (in this instance : twice).
- When you have to change of yarn color : use the new the color on the last yarn over of the last stitch of the previous color.
Amigurumi baby penguin : the beak
In charcoal grey :
- Rd 1 : start 5 sc in a magic ring [5]
- Rd 2 : inc in all sts [10]
- Rd 3 : sc in all sts [10]
- Rd 4 : (1 sc, 1 inc)*5 [15]
Fasten off leaving a tail long enough to sew the beak on the baby penguin’s face afterwards. The beak doesn’t need to be stuffed. Flatten it before the assembly step.
Body of the baby penguin
The first 13 rounds of the crocheted baby penguin are crocheted in black :
- Rd 1 : start 6 sc in a magic ring [6]
- Rd 2 : inc in all 6 [12]
- Rd 3 : (1 sc, 1 inc)*6 [18]
- Rd 4 : (2 sc, 1 inc)*6 [24]
- Rd 5 : (3 sc, 1 inc)*6 [30]
- Rd 6 : (4 sc, 1 inc)*6 [36]
- Rd 7 : (5 sc, 1 inc)*6 [42]
- Rd 8 : (6 sc, 1 inc)*6 [48]
- Rd 9 : (7 sc, 1 inc)*6 [54]
- Rd 10 : (8 sc, 1 inc)*6 [60]
- Rds 11 – 13 : s.c in all sts [60]
We’re now starting the baby penguin’s face white motif.
- Rd 14 : 20 s.c in black, 6 s.c in white, 8 s.c in black, 6 s.c in white, 20 s.c in black [60]
- Rds 15 – 16 : 19 s.c in black, 8 s.c in white, 6 s.c in black, 8 s.c in white, 19 s.c in black [60]
- Rds 17 – 18 : 18 s.c in black, 10 s.c in white, 4 s.c in black, 10 s.c in white, 18 s.c in black [60]
- Rds 19 – 20 : 17 s.c in black, 12 s.c in white, 2 s.c in black, 12 s.c in white, 17 s.c in black [60]
- Rds 21 – 23 : 16 s.c in black, 28 s.c in white, 16 s.c in black [60]
Color change : switch to light grey.
- Rds 24 – 44 : sc in all sts [60]
After round 30, insert the safety eyes and sew the beak :
- Insert the eyes between round 18 and 19, 3 stitches from the central black strip.
- Sew the beak in the middle of the face, between the central black strip and the beginning of the light grey body.
Just a few more rounds and the body will be done :
- Rd 45 : (8 s.c + 1 dec)*6 [54]
- Rd 46 : (7 s.c + 1 dec)*6 [48]
- Rd 47 : (6 s.c + 1 dec)*6 [42]
- Rd 48 : (5 s.c + 1 dec)*6 [36]
- Rd 49 : (4 s.c + 1 dec)*6 [30]
- Rd 50 : (3 s.c + 1 dec)*6 [24]
- Rd 51 : (2 s.c + 1 dec)*6 [18]
- Rd 52 : (1 s.c + 1 dec)*6 [12]
- Rd 53 : dc in all sts [6]
Fasten off, leaving a long tail. With a tapestry needle, weave the yarn tail through the front loop of each remaining stitch and tightly pull to close the baby penguin’s body.
Amigurumi baby penguin : the wings
Make 2 wings in light grey :
- Rd 1 : start 5 sc in a magic ring [5]

Amigurumi baby penguin : assembly
To complete your baby penguin, you still have to sew the tail, the feet and the wings :
- Tail : sew the tail between rounds 42 and 46, centered in the back.
- Feet : 4 stitches between each foot, on the rounds 47/48, on the front of the baby penguin.
- Wings : sew them between rounds 25 & 26, on each side of the body (count 1 round below the white area of the head).
Congratulations, your baby penguin is now done !

Very good blog post. I certainly love this website. Thanks!
Hi. I love this pattern and love how my penguin is coming out so far. I’m an advanced crocheter, so figured it out very quickly, but a beginner may find it difficult, that at rows 45 through 53 of the body it says dc (as in double crochet) instead of dec (decrease). I hope my feedback helps. I’m looking forward to seeing my finished penguin and if you would like I will tag you in my Facebook post when I’m done.
Ooooh my, you’re absolutely right, thank you !!
Sure, I’d be glad to see your penguin whe he’s all done 😀 !
